The H. Berthold type foundry, renowned for crafting high-quality typefaces, was founded in 1858 by Hermann Berthold in Berlin. By 1918 the foundry had become the largest in the world, with offices in Stuttgart, St. Petersburg, Leipzig, Riga, Budapest and Vienna. Following World War II, Berthold actively developed proprietary typesetting equipment: in the 1950s, Berthold unveiled its first phototypesetting machine, the Diatype; and in the 1960s, Berthold introduced the Diatronic, its first keyboard-controlled phototypesetter for volume production.

The signature alphabet of one of New York’s most significant buildings becomes a family of clear and colorful display fonts.
For those who understand outdoor lettering as a form of public service, no landmark seems more deserving of its own typeface than Lever House. Designed by Gordon Bunshaft and completed in 1952, Lever House is celebrated for its emphasis on both technological innovation and urban values: it pioneered glass curtain wall construction, the technique that came to define the modern skyscraper, and it used its site to favor aesthetic and social considerations over the raw potential for profit. There could hardly be a project more sympathetic with H&FJ’s own values, making the opportunity to design a typeface for Lever House an irresistible commission for the then-new collaboration between typeface designers Jonathan Hoefler and Tobias Frere-Jones.
Weingut Script Flourish is a decorative display font with high contrasts, perfectly drawn to the tiniest details. The font is trimmed to fairly large font sizes and is highly suitable for chapter titles or book jackets as well as Headlines, Invitations and wine labels Smiley, although also impressing with an astounding legibility in small typesettings. Inspired by the hand drawn Blätterschrift from the 19th century Mettenleiter’s Schriftenmagazin, its basic structure is related to the English Script. The creative process started in summer 2009 and after 600 hours of work, over a 2 year period, Weingut now unfolds to reveal all its charms.
